Specialty Coffee with purpose
Everyone has a morning ritual and even though we might come from different background and cultures, it is a morning beverage that connects us all and for most it is coffee. We might not be aware that coffee plays a role in longevity – most of us just enjoy it because of the much-needed caffeine kick that becomes a part of our daily ritual.
Science confirms that Coffee is #1 source of antioxidants, improves mood, lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and even liver cancer. It goes without saying, that the way you consume your coffee can directly impact your health. Blue Zones Food Guidelines approves of coffee without sugar and Blue Zones centenarians including Sardinians, Ikarians and Nicoyans have championed the art of coffee consumption.
Blue Zones Nicoya decided to create a line that was completely inspired by the centenarians of our Costa Rican Blue Zone. This gourmet coffee line family comes from micro lots, it is hand picked, sun dried and goes through different processes to create a complex and exotic cup of joe.
We’ve created four specialty coffee blends for our Centenarios coffee: Cerro Negro, House Blend, Red Honey and Matambú-Chorotega from the Chorotega indigenous tribe. The most impressive and ancestral coffee you’ll find.
Our gourmet micro lot coffee comes from specific Costa Rican terroir that help shape each bean to perfection. Micro lots are characterized by the importance of producing quality and specialty coffee in a sustainable way, providing our costumers a unique and exclusive experience with each sip.
House Blend is a balanced creation of different hand picked beans, we look for a perfect harmony between acidity, aroma and body. Our house blend has a nutty and malty aroma with a touch of wood. It’s a bright and intense cup, medium-bodied, with a fresh citric acidity similar to lime and grapefruit.
Cerro Negro is harvested in Nicoya´s highest mountain and goes through a natural fermentation process, then it´s sundried in our patios. Each bean is selected when it comes to perfect ripeness. Centenarios Cerro Negro is a coffee processed through natural fermentation, which gives it a delicate aroma of nuts and caramel, with a slight herbal tone. In the mouth, its body is medium to light, it has a long and fresh herbal acidity that accompanies the bouquet throughout its development, while notes of molasses, dark chocolate and hazelnut appear.
Centenarios Red Honey contains 70 times more antioxidant active molecules than regular coffee, this is because of the exposure to ocean breeze, soil minerals and high sun exposure. Centenarios is a Red Honey process coffee which is the bridge between a wet and natural coffee. The cherry is pulsed and then dried with the layer of mucilage left in the parchment. This effect creates a sticky substance very similar to the appearance of honey. The coffee made with this process generally contains a greater sweetness and a balanced acidity with fruity notes. The flavors are clear and defined, much more remarkable and pronounced than those of a natural process.
Our most special coffee blend yet is our Matambú-Chorotega Coffee. This coffee goes through a natural fermentation process, which is a mix between natural and honey fermentation processes. Harvested by the Chorotega tribe, the largest pre-Columbian ethnic group in Costa Rica, they pick each bean and sun dry it until each bean loses all humidity. Then, they finish this coffee with different methods based on their ancestral knowledge and secrets, creating an exotic and extraordinary coffee cup.
Our Matambú-Chorotega coffee has a red wine and clove flavor, with a lingering almond background. It has a medium body, with a clear presence of flavors typical of red wine, originated in the fermentation process of the fruit used by the indigenous people of Matambú. Its acidity is fresh and sharp, similar to lime and anise. However, the almond flavorpersists throughout its entire delicious journey.
We also have our more traditional cup of joe: Morning Brew 100% Arabica Coffee. This blend is a classic, dark roast, washed arabica coffee. The most typical Nicoyan coffee yet. A must have in every centenarian household!
Besides creating an amazing and balanced cup of coffee, our main purpose is to give the centenarians of Guanacaste-Costa Rica a strong platform to improve their livelihood: with each coffee you buy, 5% of its revenue goes directly to Los Centenarios Project.
Drink delicious gourmet coffee and help the centenarians and their families!
