Food is our best medicine
Blue Zones was born with the faithful belief that food is our best medicine. Taking the diet of the centennial population of the Nicoya Peninsula as a reference, the company bases its products and its permanent research on this longevity diet since its beginnings. From the very start, social consciousness has also been much alive and consistent in the company’s growth.
This vision of being encouraged by the habits of the privileged population that reaches or surpasses the century of life in the region is also inspired by their traditions and manners.
Blue Zones Nicoya in Costa Rica has a spirit of environmental conservation, solidarity and respect for heritage, hence its title of Company B for its high commitment to the community.
Eco-friendly efforts include a conservation space for animals at risk, where the Macaw Project stands out, for the protection and reproduction of Scarlet macaws. At the same time, there is an incubator for other animal species at risk.
In the area of sustainability, the farm model, located in San José – Pinilla, has a solar energy system and water recycling. In addition, a bio digester is used and the use of compost is practiced.
Its efforts to contribute to the area include donating cafeterias to different public schools. As well as a permanent economic contribution to the Nicoya Peninsula Blue Zone Association, to directly favor the centennial population.
Returning to food, its main mission is the rescue of endemic products from the area for the production of functional foods. Such as chan, pujagua corn and lippia alba can be mentioned. Burbark, lemon grass and soon tree spinach are all used.
Products like the carao has many benefits such as allowing the body to consume and process the iron present in other foods. Ojoche or maya nut has tryptophan, a generator of happiness and with a high capacity to reduce stress levels.
With these consumption options, the flag raised by the company is to protect the immune system and at the same time recover the cultivation of traditional foods whose value has been minimized.
Curiously, within this mission, the company has also dedicated itself to giving Guanacaste coffee a voice, characterized by being the healthiest in the world. Nicoya honey, although undervalued, differs in that it comes from places surrounded by different plantations and fruit trees making it a wild honey.
Additionally, the company takes advantage of linkage programs to offer more opportunities to local farmers and producers, increasing the positive impact it generates in the area. Thanks to the focus of its products, aimed at people aware of their well-being and attracted by healthy options, Blue Zones Nicoya has been working together with Blue Zones LLC for three years as an ally.
Blue Zones Nicoya is the first LLC member to have its own products. This model is to be replicated in the other points of the world that fall into the category of blue zones: Okinawa (Japan), Icaria (Greece), Loma Linda (California) and Barbaglia (Sardinia, Italy).
